Attorney General Platkin and DEP Commissioner LaTourette Announce Proposed Settlement

with Solvay Polymers Regarding “Forever Chemical” Pollution in and around West Deptford

June 19, 2023.  In a settlement with the State of New Jersey, Solvay Specialty Polymers is to pay $393 million to remediate, treat, and prevent further PFAS contamination in the area surrounding their West Deptford plant, including Paulsboro.  For Paulsboro NJ this means some compensation for the costs of treating the community’s drinking water for PFAS contamination.  The settlement will also require cooperation and funding for further investigations about the extent of contamination by the legacy and newer PFAS compounds that Solvay allegedly discharged into the local environment, along with commitments for clean up.

Everyone on our Paulsboro PFAS Health Study team, part of the CDC/ATSDR PFAS Multi-Site Study, is playing a vital role in the effort to protect the environment and health from PFAS ‘forever chemicals.’   We are working locally in Paulsboro and with other scientists across the country and globally to increase knowledge and understaning of the health impacts of exposure to PFAS.
