Environmental health challenges are increasingly complex, global, and interconnected. Emerging contaminants including micro- and nanoplastics, advanced materials, exposures driven by adverse weather conditions, infectious diseases, and disruptions to food and water systems threaten ecological integrity and human health at every stage of life. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary science capable of linking environmental exposure to biological response, disease susceptibility, and population-level outcomes.
The Environmental and Population Health Biosciences Division at Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute is committed to advancing mechanistic and translational environmental health research that protects all populations across life stages, provides an inclusive and comprehensive learning atmosphere for the next generation of environmental scientists, and informs prevention strategies, policy development, and public health action.
Vision:
Protect present and future generations through innovative environmental health science that connects exposure, biological mechanisms, and human disease across the lifespan.
Mission:
Conduct interdisciplinary and translational environmental health research to identify, characterize, and mitigate emerging environmental stressors affecting human and planetary health.
Advance exposure-to-disease science across the lifespan, integrating inhalation and ingestion exposure science, reproductive and developmental health, immunology, neuroscience, molecular toxicology, epidemiology, and computational modeling to understand how environmental exposures influence disease susceptibility and long-term health outcomes.
Develop, advance, optimize, and apply innovative technologies and quantitative tools including exposure characterization platforms, advanced microscopy and imaging, bioinformatics, machine learning, and systems biology approaches to assess environmental contaminants and biological responses at unprecedented resolution.
Continue to prioritize vulnerable and highly exposed populations, including pregnant individuals, children, workers, and environmentally burdened communities.
Train the next generation of environmental health leaders through cross-disciplinary education spanning public health, medicine, engineering, environmental sciences, and data science, preparing scientists to address emerging environmental challenges through collaborative and solution-oriented research.
Engage globally and locally through collaborative partnerships, recognizing that environmental health challenges transcend geographic and socioeconomic boundaries. The Division seeks to build partnerships among academia, government, industry, healthcare systems, and communities to accelerate scientific discovery and translate research into meaningful public health impact.
