Josephine Awadalla

Josephine Awadalla, a Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences sophomore, presented her findings on the challenges faced by NJ volunteer fire companies. Josephine analyzed interviews with fire chiefs participating in the NJ Firefighter Cancer Assessment and Prevention Study (NJ CAPS, Judith Graber, PI). Josephine found that volunteer departments often lack financial resources needed to implement cancer prevention practices, such as decontamination (decon) and the provision of a second set of turnout gear for active firefighters. Josephine completed this research as a participant in Project SUPER, a STEM-focused enrichment program offered to undergraduate students through Douglass Residential College.
