Stereology Assurances

Stereology is a very reliable and precise method for determining various measures from a three-dimensional piece of tissue. The ability to perform the technique requires the specific identification of a particular target of interest. Typically, antibody-stained structures such as cells, axons, or terminals are used. However, anything that can be reliably and distinctly identified can be quantified using unbiased stereology. If this criteria can be met then a stereologic probe should be feasible. One or two preliminary steps to insure that the structure or region of interest can be sectioned and the particles of interest can be identified will be the only things necessary to make assurances about the ability to perform stereology.
