Public Education and
Risk Communication
The goals of the Public Education and Risk Communication (PERC) Division
are to advance the environmental health literacy of K-12th grade youth
and educators; to assist communities in identifying and addressing environmental
health issues of concern, and to provide professionals with training courses
that address environmental and occupational health issues. It also serves
as a community outreach arm of our NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences
Center. Division activities include the development and dissemination
of curricular materials and resources that translate leading scientific
research into comprehensive lessons and activities through teacher training
programs conducted by its Resource Center; training professionals engaged
in occupational safety and health activities both on-site at the Centers
for Education and Training and at host facilities worldwide; and coordinating
and evaluating community projects, including community forums and focus
groups. PERC initiatives are supported by multiple corporate, foundation
and government funding sources.
