A new study funded by the
US Department of Defense focuses on health effects of diesel exhaust,
a ubiquitous contaminant and is being carried out in collaboration with
faculty from the Exposure Measurement and Assessment Division. It will
explore mechanisms by which diesel exhaust may set up an acute phase
response to mediate and perpetuate symptoms such as those characteristic
of ill Gulf War Veterans.
A recently funded EPA STAR
grant will explore mechanisms by which fine and ultrafine particles
promote inflammation-independent cardiovascular effects through interactions
with blood platelets and the vascular endothelium in genetically susceptible
individuals.
