Howard Kipen holds joint appointments in Public Health, Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. He is Acting Deputy Director of the Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences Institute and Director of its Occupational Health Division. He holds graduate faculty appointments at Rutgers University in toxicology and environmental science. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley, his medical degrees at the University of California at San Francisco. and his MPH from Columbia University School of Public Health. He completed internal medicine residency training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, and his occupational medicine training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He is board certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine. He is a past recipient of a five-year academic award in environmental and occupational medicine from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). He has served on five Institute of Medicine Committees (two as chair), as well as being a scientific advisor to the Department of Veterans Affairs on Persian Gulf War Issues. He has published over 100 scientific papers, chapters, and other communications on the effects of exposure to environmental agents including benzene, asbestos, and airway irritants. For the past eight years he has been collaborating on NIH-funded studies with Nancy Fiedler, PhD, on investigating the cause of individuals with medically unexplained symptoms relating to the environment, including Gulf War Illness, multiple chemical sensitivities, and indoor air quality. This work has been funded by NIH, VA, CDC, and NIOSH.
